A new mini-moon, asteroid 2024 PT5, will orbit Earth from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25 before returning to the solar system. Discovered by ATLAS in August, this mini-moon is likely a real asteroid, unlike past mini-moons that were space junk. Amateur astronomer Tony Dunn shared a simulation showing its path, which will circle about 25% of Earth. The asteroid’s geocentric energy will be negative for 56.6 days.
