Although mammals’ time on Earth has been incredibly successful, a new study suggests that we are now only halfway through our time on this planet and that species are likely to become extinct at an increasingly higher rate in the future. Scientists estimate that the vast majority—about 75%—of the mammal species that exist today will have disappeared in less than 500 years unless more aggressive conservation efforts are undertaken. This data highlights the need for continued focus on biodiversity efforts if we want to ensure that mammals are able to inhabit our planet for generations to come.
