An important court ruling has recently been made in Portugal’s European Court of Human Rights in which it recognized global warming as a human rights violation. This landmark decision held that the Portuguese government had a legal obligation to prioritize climate action, and must ensure citizens are not subject to disproportionate environmental risks. This ruling is a first, and is expected to set an example for other countries to prioritize their climate action.
