Astronomers have created the most detailed infrared map of the Milky Way, featuring over 1.5 billion objects, using ESO’s VISTA telescope. This 500-terabyte dataset, the largest from an ESO telescope, spans 13 years and 420 nights of observations. The map, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, reveals newborn stars, globular clusters, brown dwarfs, and free-floating planets. VISTA’s infrared capabilities allow it to see through galactic dust, providing unprecedented insights into our galaxy. The map covers an area equivalent to 8600 full moons and includes 10 times more objects than a 2012 map by the same team.
