Earth will temporarily have a second “moon,” an asteroid named 2024 PT5, from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25. Discovered by ATLAS in August, this mini-moon will orbit Earth without posing any threat. Unlike past mini-moons, which were sometimes space junk, 2024 PT5 is likely a real asteroid. Amateur astronomer Tony Dunn shared a simulation of its path, noting it has been near Earth since July.
