Japan will begin releasing 1.25 million tons of contaminated water stored at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday. The move is to clear space for the ongoing decommissioning of the facility that suffered a triple meltdown after a 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The plan has been protested by local fishermen who believe it will harm their industry and mar Japan’s reputation as a seafood producer.
