Lula, Brazil’s former President, announced plans to combat deforestation in the Amazon rainforest by funneling more money into protecting the region. The plan, called “Green Balance,” is expected to cost up to $1tn between 2020 and 2030 and will seek to combine biodiversity with economic development initiatives. This will be done by incentivizing alternative governmental approaches and developing technologies to monitor and protect the Amazon rainforest.
