Mars once had flowing water and a thick atmosphere, but around 3.5 billion years ago, the water dried up and the atmosphere thinned. The mystery of where Mars’ atmosphere went may be explained by MIT geologists who suggest it is locked in the planet’s clay-covered crust. Their study proposes that water triggered reactions in rocks that converted atmospheric carbon dioxide into methane, which was stored in the clay. Similar processes occur on Earth.
