Montgomery, Ala., has seen a recent engagement in civil disobedience with protestors demanding the removal of monuments which commemorate Confederate leaders. The conflict turned violent last week when a group of counterprotestors gathering at Confederate monuments clashed with those calling for their removal, resulting in scuffles, yelling, and signs being thrown. The altercation represents a desire for Alabama to reckon with its past and move towards a more inclusive present.
