NASA is planning to build a Lunar Gateway space station orbiting the Moon which would be used as a base for astronauts to live and work in, as well as a refueling stop for missions to the surface of the Moon or to other destinations in space. It is seen as a crucial part of the agency’s Artemis programme, which aims to land the first woman and next man on the Moon in 2024. This marks a continuation of NASA’s aim to go beyond low-Earth orbit and take an even larger role in space exploration.
