NASA researchers at Ames Research Center said goodbye to their flying laboratory, a modified Boeing 747, after 48 years of service. The aircraft, known as the “Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy” or SOFIA, was used for groundbreaking research in astronomy and atmospheric science. Its retirement marks the end of an era for NASA’s airborne research capabilities.
