New Orleans’ only source of drinking water is now threatened with a potentially serious issue: saltwater intrusion. As drought has caused the Mississippi River to reach its lowest levels in more than a century, the salty Gulf of Mexico is pushing water along its coastline deeper inland. If the current drought persists, the drinking water supply for the entire city of New Orleans could become contaminated, putting its citizens’ safety at risk.
