Niger’s government closed its airspace on August 7th as a deadline set by the West African regional bloc ECOWAS for the reversal of a military coup expired. ECOWAS had given the military junta in power since April a deadline of August 6th to step down or face unspecified sanctions. The closing of the airspace is an important step towards containing the situation within Niger following the coup.
