Researchers working at the CERN laboratory in Geneva were of the first to successfully cause photons to collide. This was accomplished by manipulating the time, or phase, of the light waves in order to create synchrony between the photons and allow them to interact. This breakthrough could lead to applications across a wide range of fields, such as quantum computing and optics.
