NASA’s radar in the Mojave Desert captured images of formidable asteroids, including a 1-mile-wide asteroid, as they passed near Earth. Fortunately, no known asteroids pose a threat for over a century, and the likelihood of a major impact in the next thousand years is very low. The imagery aids planetary scientists in preparation for potential future threats. NASA shared an image of the 1.5-kilometer asteroid 2011 UL21, which passed 4.1 million miles from Earth on June 27, a relatively close distance in space terms.
