The elephant’s trunk is an amazing appendage that can lift over 700 lbs and perform activities with unexpected dexterity. Using advanced microscopy, researchers have discovered that the trunk is made up of a dense network of smooth muscle fibers that provide power to the trunk’s movements. Its intricate muscular system controls movement direction, force and speed. Remarkably, the trunk’s sensors allow the elephant to assess the object its trunk is in contact with, and thus adjust the power and speed of its movements accordingly. Amazingly, the elephant is able to perform complex and delicate manipulations with remarkable accuracy and speed.
