The European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing the DRACO mission, a washing machine-sized spacecraft, for a daring reentry in 2027. Weighing 440 pounds, DRACO will record its fiery descent through Earth’s atmosphere using onboard cameras and sensors. Designed without propulsion or communication systems, it will transmit data via an indestructible capsule post-destruction. The mission aims to enhance spacecraft reentry capabilities and reduce space junk. DRACO will last about 12 hours, reaching 621 miles altitude before reentering over the ocean. The capsule will deploy a parachute for a gentle descent after the satellite’s destruction.
