The extinction of many mammal species has been linked to the fragmentation of Pangaea Ultima, the most recent ancient supercontinent. Research has found that when the continent began to split apart, the existing mammals were separated into different ecosystems, making it more difficult to survive and adapt to changing environment, leading to their eventual extinction. This extinction is still felt today as the descendent species rarely evolved the same complexity in terms of size and diversity.
