This research discovered how the aquatic plant Elodea nuttallii is able to grow so quickly. The plant contains small structures called ‘bombs’ which contain calcium carbonate and are released into the environment, which helps the plant absorb the necessary minerals to help it grow. This research could have potential implications for understanding the development of plant growth in general.

Scientists have successfully revived a species of roundworm that had been frozen in permafrost for over 46,000 years. Annually-layered samples of Siberian permafrost dating back to the Pleistocene era were used to find the worm, which was then revived using a mixture of soil and acids. This success provides new hope for the reanimation of extinct creatures, and furthering our understanding of evolution and adaptation.
At least seventeen people were killed and dozens more were injured after a passenger train derailed in a rural district of Pakistan. Nine of the carriages went off the tracks after the driver reportedly failed to reduce speed when going over a bridge, which led to the fatal accident. Emergency services are still searching for survivors at the scene.
