Transposons are pieces of DNA that are able to move around from one place to another in a genome. These “selfish genes” can be key elements in the evolution and diversification of species. Research has indicated that their ability to rapidly change the genetic landscape can have an impact on a species’ development. This knowledge can be combined with other genomic techniques to better understand how species evolve.
