Mohammed Deif, the longtime leader of Hamas’s Qassam Brigades, has survived another Israeli assassination attempt. A senior Hamas official confirmed Deif is “fine” and overseeing military operations after a massive Israeli air strike on Gaza’s southern area, which killed at least 90 and wounded 300. Israel targeted Deif in the al-Mawasi camp, a humanitarian zone, but claims Hamas is hiding the strike’s true results. Archaeologists in Mexico discovered a mysterious subterranean structure with painted walls beneath a Maya ball court. The building, found during excavations, may date to the Early Classic period (A.D. 200-600) and is covered with painted stucco. Ivan Šprajc, leading the excavation, noted its significance as ball courts are typically found at major Maya sites, central to regional political organization. The discovery followed a lidar survey in Campeche, Mexico, mapping the landscape’s topography. Further excavations are needed to determine the structure’s shape and function.

The heliosphere, influenced by the sun, blocks many cosmic rays from reaching our solar system’s planets. The sun, a star emitting a steady stream of plasma known as the solar wind, also releases coronal mass ejections and flares. This area is over a hundred times larger than the distance from the sun to Earth. Sarah Spitzer, a research fellow at the University of Michigan, contributed to this article originally published at The Conversation and featured on Space.com.

A 150 million-year-old dinosaur skeleton named Gnatalie is being displayed at the Natural History Museum’s new welcome center in Los Angeles. Gnatalie, a 75-foot-long green sauropod, is unique for its green bones, colored by the mineral celadonite during fossilization. This rare coloration occurred due to volcanic activity 50-80 million years ago. Discovered in 2007 in Utah’s Badlands, Gnatalie represents a new species from the late Jurassic Era. The exhibit will be open to the public in the fall of 2024.
