Perseverance is set to tackle some of Mars’ steepest terrain, gaining around 1,000 feet in elevation by year-end. The rover will compare rocks from the crater rim, floor, and previously explored areas to enhance understanding of Mars’ geological history. Key targets include “Pico Turquino,” with ancient fractures possibly linked to hydrothermal systems, and “Witch Hazel Hill,” where bedrock layers may reveal climate clues. These studies could indicate past conditions suitable for microbial life.
