A report by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) warns that ocean acidification is nearing a critical threshold, threatening marine life and climate stability. Six out of nine crucial planetary boundaries have already been exceeded due to human activities, including climate change, habitat loss, and pollution. Ocean acidification, driven by CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, is set to become the seventh breached boundary. Acidic waters harm marine species and disrupt food supplies, while also reducing the oceans’ ability to absorb CO2. The ozone layer is the only boundary not close to being crossed, showing signs of recovery.
