Police in northern Switzerland detained several people and opened a criminal case related to the suspected death of a person using a “suicide capsule” called Sarco. The device, developed by Exit International, allows a person to die by suffocation through nitrogen gas. Swiss law permits assisted suicide without external assistance or self-serving motives. The incident occurred near Merishausen, and authorities are investigating for incitement and accessory to suicide. A Dutch photographer was also detained. Swiss prosecutors had warned the operators of potential legal consequences. The Dutch Foreign Ministry is in contact but cannot interfere.
