NASA scientists report that Earth will temporarily capture a tiny asteroid, 2024 PT5, as a “second moon” this week. The asteroid will orbit Earth in a horseshoe path for just under two months before returning to its solar orbit. The capture starts at 15:54 EDT on Sunday and ends at 11:43 EDT on November 25. 2024 PT5, part of the Arjuna asteroid belt, will travel at 2,200 mph and maintain a distance of 2.8 million miles from Earth. Unlike the moon, it won’t be visible to casual stargazers due to its small size. NASA’s system first spotted it on August 7.
