New research in Science Advances suggests asteroid Ryugu formed near Jupiter, not beyond Saturn as previously thought. Samples from Ryugu, brought back by Japan’s Hayabusa 2 probe, were analyzed by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research. The study compared nickel types in Ryugu samples and carbon-rich meteorites, indicating different carbon-rich asteroids may have formed near Jupiter through varied processes. Since December 2020, Ryugu’s samples have undergone extensive analysis worldwide, helping scientists understand its origin and journey through the solar system.
