Space travel is costly and dangerous, with high expenses and numerous hazards. NASA’s solution involves growing mushroom structures on the moon using In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), leveraging local resources like water and lunar dust. Fungal species can be turned into strong building materials, a concept known as mycotecture. The Mycotecture Off Planet Structures project has received a Phase III contract with NASA for further development. Mycotecture, already used on Earth for various applications, is being explored by Chris Maurer’s firm, redhouse, to address both space and terrestrial challenges.
