A House spending bill directs NASA to initiate an asteroid mission in partnership with industry and an orbital debris inspection mission. The House Appropriations Committee’s report, released on July 8, includes provisions for NASA to start studies on missions not in the agency’s request. Specifically, NASA is to spend $5 million on a public-private reconnaissance mission to the near-Earth asteroid Apophis before its 2029 flyby. Scientists are interested in observing Apophis before the flyby to study potential changes in its physical attributes.
