A North Korean defector in his 30s was detained by South Korean police for attempting to cross back to the North on a stolen bus. He was caught on the Unification Bridge after crashing into a barricade. The man, who defected a decade ago, cited difficulties in the South as his reason for returning. He stole the bus from Paju and was apprehended shortly after. South Korea prohibits unauthorized border crossings, with penalties up to ten years in prison. Defectors returning to the North are rare, with only 31 cases from 2012 to 2022.
