Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, known as the Doomsday Glacier, is melting faster than expected due to warm sea water, potentially causing sea levels to rise by up to ten feet. Researchers from the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) have been studying the glacier since 2018 using ice-breaking expeditions and underwater robots. Findings indicate the glacier has been retreating for over 80 years, accelerating in the past 30 years, and could collapse within 200 years, threatening coastal communities globally. However, the likelihood of a chain reaction of ice shelf collapses is lower than previously predicted.
