Archaeologists in Mexico discovered a mysterious subterranean structure with painted walls beneath a Maya ball court. The building, found during excavations, may date to the Early Classic period (A.D. 200-600) and is covered with painted stucco. Ivan Šprajc, leading the excavation, noted its significance as ball courts are typically found at major Maya sites, central to regional political organization. The discovery followed a lidar survey in Campeche, Mexico, mapping the landscape’s topography. Further excavations are needed to determine the structure’s shape and function.
