Arp 107 is a pair of interacting galaxies located 465 million light-years away in the constellation Leo Minor. A new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image, shared on Sept. 18, 2024, reveals a large spiral galaxy interacting with a small elliptical galaxy. Cataloged by Halton Arp in 1966, Arp 107 was previously imaged by Hubble. JWST’s infrared capabilities now allow astronomers to study it in greater detail, revealing star-forming regions, dust, and a bright nucleus in the spiral galaxy. The image resembles a cosmic face with galaxy cores as “eyes” and a star bridge as a “smile.”
