Asteroid 2024 ON, resembling a space peanut or chunky snowman, was imaged by the Deep Space Network’s Goldstone Radar before its close approach to Earth at 620,000 miles on September 17. The radar images revealed it as a contact binary with two lobes and bright spots indicating large boulders. Measuring about 1150 feet long, 2024 ON is classified as potentially hazardous but poses no immediate threat. Contact binaries are common, with 14% of near-Earth asteroids over 660 feet sharing this shape. NASA monitors these asteroids for any trajectory changes that could pose future risks.
