Asteroid debris from a moonlet partially exploded by NASA’s 2022 DART mission could create a stunning meteor shower visible from Earth. Dr. Eloy Peña-Asensio from the Polytechnic Institute of Milan claims the small, high-speed rock pieces will disintegrate in the atmosphere, producing luminous streaks. The DART mission aimed to test the ability to alter an asteroid’s orbit by deliberately colliding with Dimorphos, a moonlet orbiting the larger asteroid Didymos. The research team has published preliminary findings on the debris’ behavior.
