Astrobotic’s Peregrine lunar lander failed to reach the moon due to a valve issue in the propulsion system, as revealed in a report. Engineers have since redesigned the valve and added redundancy to the next lander, Griffin. The problem occurred hours after launch on January 8, when helium flowed uncontrollably through a pressure control valve, causing the oxidizer tank to over-pressurize and rupture. The valve failure was attributed to “vibration-induced relaxation” of threaded components. Telemetry data confirmed the anomaly’s timing and location.
