Kenneth Smith, a death row inmate in Alabama, was executed by nitrogen hypoxia on April 10, 2019. Smith had been on death row since 1994 after being convicted of capital murder in December of that year. The Alabama Department of Corrections said Smith was the first inmate in the state to be executed using nitrogen hypoxia, an experimental execution method. The state resorted to using the gas rather than other methods due to legal issues surrounding the traditional use of lethal drugs. Smith’s execution was also the first to use nitrogen hypoxia in the U.S.
