Citizen scientists helped identify a faint red star moving at 1.3 million mph through the Milky Way, potentially escaping the galaxy’s gravity. This “hypervelocity” low-mass star, if confirmed, would be the first of its kind. Low-mass stars are more common but harder to detect due to their cooler, less luminous nature. Hypervelocity stars are rare, making this discovery particularly exciting, according to researchers from the University of Notre Dame. The study is set for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
