Colombian President Gustavo Petro blamed the world’s richest 1% for climate change and other forms of “mass destruction,” including the war in Gaza, in a UN General Assembly speech. He accused powerful countries and individuals of environmental harm and economic oppression, urging a shift from capitalist principles to those that “defend life.” Petro emphasized choosing between “life or greed.” He called for international opposition to capitalist principles and support for life-preserving ideas.
