Earth will temporarily capture an asteroid named “2024 PT5” in its gravitational orbit from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25. The 33-foot-long space rock, first spotted by South African researchers, will follow a “horseshoe” path around Earth. Some scientists call it a “mini-moon,” a term for objects temporarily captured in a planet’s orbit. However, there’s debate about this classification since 2024 PT5 won’t complete a full revolution before returning to its solar orbit. This phenomenon occurred previously with 2020 CD3, and 2024 PT5 is expected to return in 2055.
