Earth will temporarily gain a “mini moon” when asteroid 2024 PT5, about the size of a school bus, gets trapped by Earth’s gravity on Sunday. Discovered in August by astronomers at Complutense University of Madrid, the asteroid will orbit Earth for nearly 57 days before resuming its path on November 25. These mini moons are more common than previously thought but are hard to detect due to their small size. The discovery was published by the American Astronomical Society, and the asteroid is expected to pass by Earth again in 2055.
