French police are investigating the disappearance of Durandal, a legendary sword linked to the semi-mythical knight Roland, from the village of Rocamadour. The sword, embedded in a rock for about 1,300 years, was a popular tourist attraction. Chronicled in the 11th-century epic “The Song of Roland,” Durandal was said to be indestructible and was given to Roland by Charlemagne. According to legend, Roland threw the sword to prevent enemies from capturing it, and it landed in Rocamadour.
