Hurricane Beryl, unprecedented for its July intensity, became a Category 5 storm before weakening to a high-end Category 4. After making landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island, it moved west in the Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center forecasts serious impacts in Jamaica and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Grenada’s Prime Minister reported at least three deaths and significant destruction, particularly on Carriacou and Petite Martinique, with impassable roads and rough seas hampering relief efforts. Beryl is expected to remain a major hurricane as it nears Jamaica.
