Hurricane John struck Mexico’s southern coast as a Category 3 storm, causing life-threatening floods and mudslides. With winds of 120 mph, it made landfall near Marquelia in Guerrero state. John weakened to a tropical storm, moving slowly northwest of Acapulco, likely causing catastrophic rainfall. Initially, it had winds of 35 mph but rapidly intensified. The storm may re-intensify, continuing to produce intense rainfall and flash flooding. Oaxaca evacuated 3,000 people and set up shelters, suspending classes and closing businesses in Puerto Escondido. The hurricane warning has been downgraded to a tropical storm warning.
