In September 2022, Leyla, then a teenager, protested in Iran after Mahsa Amini’s death in custody for allegedly wearing her headscarf incorrectly and was shot in the leg. Leyla boycotted the elections, feeling betrayed by both the West and her fellow Iranians for not continuing the protests.
