NASA selected two mission proposals for further review to observe X-ray and far-infrared wavelengths. Each team receives $5 million for a 12-month study, with one mission to be chosen in 2026 for a 2032 launch. This mission will inaugurate the Probe Explorers class, bridging flagship and smaller missions. The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite, led by Christopher Reynolds, aims to study supermassive black holes and stellar feedback. The initiative aligns with the 2020 Decadal Survey, with mission costs capped at $1 billion, excluding launch expenses.
