NASA’s Europa Clipper mission is set to launch on a SpaceX rocket to explore Jupiter’s moon Europa, aiming to determine its habitability. The mission will conduct nearly 50 flybys over three years, studying Europa’s ice shell, potential geysers, and vast subsurface ocean, which may contain more water than Earth’s oceans. Discovered by Galileo in 1610, Europa’s young, geologically active surface was first detailed by Voyager in 1979. In 1996, NASA’s Galileo mission suggested a subsurface ocean due to Europa’s magnetic field, sparking interest in its potential to host life.
