NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft, the size of a basketball court, stores its critical electronics in a metal vault to protect against Jupiter’s intense radiation. The spacecraft will conduct around 50 close flybys of Europa, a moon suspected to harbor an ocean with potential life-supporting ingredients. Jupiter’s massive magnetic field, generated by its liquid metal core, accelerates solar wind particles, creating potent radiation belts. This radiation can damage spacecraft electronics, necessitating the protective vault. Decades ago, Voyager faced similar radiation concerns when passing Jupiter.
