NASA’s first year-long simulated Mars mission, CHAPEA-1, concluded after 378 days. Commander Kelly Haston and crewmates Anca Selariu, Ross Brockwell, and Nathan Jones exited the Mars Dune Alpha habitat at NASA’s Johnson Space Center on July 6. The mission, which began on June 25, 2023, involved simulating Mars operations, including “Marswalks,” growing vegetables, and managing stressors like communication delays and resource limitations. Their experiences will aid NASA’s planning for future crewed Mars missions, targeted for the late 2030s or early 2040s.
