NASA’s Perseverance rover discovered a unique “zebra rock” named “Freya Castle” in Mars’ Jezero crater, featuring black-and-white stripes unlike any previously seen on the planet. Captured on Sept. 13, the rock’s texture suggests it may have formed through igneous or metamorphic processes. Measuring about 8 inches across, it appears loose and distinct from the underlying bedrock, indicating it may have originated elsewhere. NASA hopes to find more of this rock type as Perseverance continues its ascent of the crater, which began in February 2021.
