New York is experiencing mid-90s temperatures, while the South Pole is at -89°F. The exoplanet WASP-39b, 1.3 times larger than Jupiter and 700 light-years away, has a unique temperature distribution. One side is always facing its star, yet the dark side is 300 degrees hotter. This is due to powerful winds transferring heat from the star-facing side to the dark side, creating a permanent evening heated to 1,450°F.
